Steve McQueen and James Dean's old haunt, the Fairfax District is full of (late-late!) nightlife and is a three minute walk away. Take a right out of the front door, walk 1 block and take a right onto N. Fairfax Ave. The Silent Movie Theatre. 611 N. Fairfax. See Buster Keaton, Rudolf Valentino and others at the only silent movie theater in existence. (Live piano accompaniment.) Nightly show at 8PM, box office opens at 6:30. $8. Canter's Restaurant, Deli and Bakery. 419 N. Fairfax. Open 24 hours. This landmark restaurant and Kibbitz room dates back to 1948. Live music 5 nights per week. Sundays are open mic; every Tuesday join the faithful Orbit gang that attends plus DJ spinning 80ís music to house and hip-hop. (323) 651-2030. Max's Bar. Dark and divey, yet plush. Decent drink prices, small appetizer menu. Nova Express Cafe. 426 N. Fairfax. Get wired under black lights in this spacey-kitsch, late-night coffee house. Largo. 432 Fairfax. Full bar and restaurant, but Largo's music scene is what packs them in. Beck, among other big names, occasionally pops in for the Friday night "Surprise Guest" spot. Open 'till 4am itís dark and moody, pizza by the slice and other Italian dishes, try the house salad, too. Cineplex Odeon. 7907 Beverly Blvd. Continue along N. Fairfax Ave. to Beverly Blvd. Take a right on Beverly and you're there. 3 screens, showings all day. Call 777-FILM and press #174 for times (or check the LA Weekly). CBS Television Studios. "Television City". Fairfax Ave south of Beverly. TV shows, game shows, many are free to attend. (323)460-3000 Farmers Market. Fairfax and 3rd St. Continue along N. Fairfax past Beverly and walk 3 blocks. Recently remodeled, over 30 different stands offer every type of the freshest, most delicious food imaginable, plus two bars with beer on tap, in an open-air setting. Flowers and gifts too. The Gilmore Abode, the original farm house built in 1852, still stands on the property; the Farmers Market's surprising history is detailed on its walls. And the Los Angeles Times lists the Farmers Market as the Number One place in LA to spot stars. But it's always been a low-key celebrity hangout -- James Dean ate breakfast here on the day he died in his Porsche (9/30/55). Walt Disney sat at Farmers Market patio tables while he designed Disneyland -- elements of the Market are part of those original designs. Sky Sushi. On the corner of Fairfax and Santa Monica: take a right out of Orbitís front door, a left onto Fairfax, and walk about 5 minutes. Sushi bar and so much more. LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art). 5905 Wilshire Blvd. 15 minutes' walk down Fairfax (a few blocks past the Farmers Market); take a left at Wilshire Blvd. and it's on your left. Large collection of art and artifacts from all over the world, plus a big contemporary art collection and a beautiful Japanese art museum. Orbit is situated on Melrose's high end that includes designer boutiques, stylish home accessory shops, etc. If you stroll down Melrose Avenue heading East, youíll find Hollywood's trendiest shopping street. Itís a tour of LA underground's most bizarre fashions and party gear with thrift shops to discount designer wear, plus great entertainment and food. Itís a cool place to Boy/Girl watch or be seen. Trends and fashion have been known to start right here and then take on a worldwide appeal. The best time to cruise is the late afternoon, shops are normally open 'till 7 or 8PM. Take a right out of the front door and walk two city blocks. Bourbon Street Shrimp. 8454 Melrose. Very good Cajun food, cool atmosphere too. The "Bourbon Street Shrimp" dish is highly recommended. Any true fan of the TV series Beverly Hills 90210 has already toured Fred Segal via Kelly's shopping sprees on the show. The horrendous prices make this more of a Ripley's Believe It Or Not experience than a shopping experience, but this celebrity mecca includes a restaurant, makeup studio, and a separate boutique for each type of accessory. Snake Pit. 7529 Melrose. 11am-2am daily. The only pub on Melrose, luckily itís a great place. Cheap drinks and happy hour from 4-7 on weekdays. Slow (at 7474 Melrose) and Wasteland (at 7428 Melrose). Two of Hollywood's best thrift shops. Check out Wasteland's rack of designer labels (like top name dresses for $20-$60). Cafe Luna. 7463 Melrose. This is the real Sunset Strip that features all the famous nightlife and clubs that lead to the infamous parties in the Hollywood Hills. Of course, Sunset Strip is all around a pretty expensive place to hang out, there are some cheaper places to eat and cruise. To walk the main part of Sunset Strip (where you will find all the following places) Take a left out of the front door of Orbit, walk a few blocks, and take a right onto Crescent Heights. You'll hit Sunset in about 10 minutes, take a left. Sunset Strip is about a 15 ‚ 25 minute walk from Orbit Lamelle's Sunset 5 Cinemas. 8000 W Sunset. On the right, at the intersection with Crescent Heights. 5 screens, shows $8.50, $6.50 students with ID and $5.50 bargain matinees. On weekends, look for special midnight shows and morning shows. Youíll find arty and off the beaten path movies playing here. Call 323 848 3500 for shows and times, or check the LA Weekly. Virgin Megastore. 8000 W Sunset. Famous rock-n-roll celebrity hotel and hangout, favorite place in Hollywood for stars to OD (as in John Belushi, among others). Miyagi's Sushi Restaurant. 8225 W Sunset. Huge, trendy sushi spot, open daily 5:30pm-2am, with last food orders at 1:15. Karaoke, Tuesdays starting at 10pm; Mondays are All You Can Eat Sushi 7-11pm. Prices vary, but are generally fairly high. 323 650-3524. Dublin's Irish Pub. 8240 W Sunset. Nightly DJs (except Wed and Sun), two floors (one for dancing and the other for lounging), and 154 televisions (mainly for sporting events) --- a slightly Americanized "Irish Pub," but they've 15 beers on tap and no cover charge, so it's worth checking out. The Standard Hotel and Cafe. 8300 W Sunset. The hippest Hotel after Orbit. Check out the view from the poolside, or the live manikin behind the glass. A sparse and arty place, there is also the Standard Cafe, open 24 hours. 323 650-9090. Carney's. 8351 W Sunset. You can't miss this burger joint -- it's in a real train caboose. Burgers are $1.90. They also have wraps and veggie burgers, etc. Open daily: Sun-Thurs, 11am-midnight; Fri-Sat, 11am-2am. 323 654-8300. Saddle Ranch Chop House. 8371 W Sunset. Always wanted to be a cowboy? Don't miss your chance to ride Saddle Ranch's mechanical bull. A steak at dinner will cost you $20-$40, but a sandwich at lunch runs about $8. Open daily 11am-2am. 323 656-2007. The House of Blues. 8340 W Sunset. This well known venue hosts big names in a small, cozy setting, itís a good place to see live music. Call 323 848-5100, or see the LA Weekly for shows. Go straight out of Orbit's front door, walk 4 blocks up Hayworth, and most of the action will be to the left. You'll pass Buzz Coffee (Internet cafe) (8200 Santa Monica; open Sun- Thurs 7AM-11PM, Fri & Sat 7-midnight), Napkins Thai restaurant, and Basix for breakfast. Fulfill your whips and corset needs at Dream Dresser (8444 Santa Monica). Don't miss the famous Barney's Beanery (8447 Santa Monica), a large pub-style rocker hangout and Hollywood's second oldest restaurant. Janis Joplin once cracked a whiskey bottle over Jim Morrison's head here. Barney's boasts "over 10,000 burger combinations," pizzas, 160 beers (25 on tap)... feel like celebrating last night's success? El Coyote. 7312 Beverly Blvd. LA is famous for itís Mexican food and no visit would be complete without a trip to El Coyote. With their famous $3 Margarita and free chips and salsa, one can eat and drink in a great Mexican atmosphere for under 10 dollars. The Easton Gym. 8053 Beverly Blvd. (323) 651-3636. Small, low-key, breezy 2nd story gym has weight room, machines, saunas, and even a sun deck on the roof. Walk south along Fairfax or Hayworth and take a right. Open weekdays 5AM-midnight, Sat 7AM-midnight, Sun 8AM-10PM. $13 per visit. Swingers. 8020 Beverly Blvd. The hippest diner in LA. See "wanna be" rock stars and the real thing at this trendy hang. Owned by Rosanne Arquetteís husband. Breakfast and lunch for about five bucks. The Beverly Center. Massive mall, at the corner of Beverly Blvd. and La Cienega Ave. Bloomingdales, Macy's, plus all the smaller stores. The Beverly Connection, the shopping complex across the street, has two large bookstores, Bookstar and Borders, and excellent Mexican fast food at Baja Fresh (they have the most amazing chicken burrito in the world). Take a left out of Orbit's front door, walk 8 or 10 minutes, take a left onto La Cienega Blvd., and walk about 5 minutes. |
